Tank 300 2.4TD

Big news for off-road enthusiasts in South Africa! The GWM Tank 300 range is about to get even more exciting with the introduction of two new 2.4TD turbodiesel variants, set to hit local dealerships in March 2025. Even better, these additions will lower the starting price of the lineup by R26 050, making the rugged SUV more accessible to buyers.

Turbodiesel Power Arrives for the Tank 300

Until now, the GWM Tank 300 has only been available with turbo-petrol and hybrid-electric (HEV) powertrains. But with the upcoming launch of the 2.4-litre turbodiesel versions, the lineup will expand to six variants, offering more choice for adventure seekers.

Just like the petrol and HEV models, the new 2.4TD powertrain will be available in Super Luxury and Ultra Luxury trims. Pricing has already been confirmed by GWM South Africa, with the Tank 300 2.4TD Super Luxury 4×4 starting at R699 900, while the more premium Ultra Luxury 4×4 will cost R739 900.

Engine Performance & Fuel Economy

The 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine under the hood—coded GW4D24—was first introduced in the P500 bakkie in August 2024 and later made its way into the P300 lineup. This powerhouse delivers:

  • 135 kW @ 3,600 rpm
  • 480 Nm @ 2,500 rpm
  • 9-speed automatic transmission (standard across both variants)
  • 4×4 drivetrain

Although GWM South Africa hasn’t officially disclosed fuel consumption figures for the local market, we can look to Australia for a strong indication. Over there, the Tank 300 2.4TD is rated at 7.8 L/100 km, which is more fuel-efficient than the turbopetrol (9.5 L/100 km) and HEV (8.4 L/100 km) models.

Additionally, the new diesel variants will come equipped with a 78-litre fuel tank (slightly smaller than the 80-litre tank in the petrol and HEV models) and boast an impressive 3,000 kg braked towing capacity—that’s 500 kg more than its petrol-powered siblings.

Why Diesel? GWM’s Strategy for the South African Market

GWM has long recognized South Africa’s strong preference for diesel vehicles, and the company is moving quickly to bring the Tank 300 2.4TD to market. Back in October 2024, Desmond Els, Sales Director of GWM South Africa, confirmed that a turbodiesel variant was in the works, stating:

“Local buyers are very pro-diesel, so we know we need to get to market as quickly as possible.”

Current Engine Options in the GWM Tank 300

Before the introduction of the turbodiesel models, the Tank 300 lineup consisted of:

  1. 2.0L Turbo-Petrol (4-cylinder)162 kW & 380 Nm, 8-speed automatic
  2. 2.0L Turbo-Petrol Hybrid (HEV)255 kW & 648 Nm, 9-speed automatic

With 526 units of the Tank 300 sold in South Africa in 2024, plus 41 more in January 2025, the arrival of diesel models is expected to drive sales even higher before the end of the year.
